A screening of Acts of Memory by artist Mairéad McClean in conversation with Jennifer O’Meara, Associate Professor in Film Studies, TCD.
Acts of Memory (28mins/16mm/2024) explores cinematic and national history through the retelling of a story about an archive lost to war and its virtual reconstruction a century later. Balancing contemplation with wit and playfulness, the film brings 16mm film into collision with AI technology. The film transcends its historical context to become a cinematic ode bridging past, present, and future.
The research for Acts of Memory was conducted during 2021-22 while Mairéad McClean was Artist in Residence with the Virtual Record Treasury of Ireland as part of the Decade of Centenaries Programme 2012-23, in association with the Trinity Long Room Hub Arts and Humanities Research Institute.
The film has been project funded by the Arts Council of Ireland/An Chomhairle Ealaíon.
